What are web analytics tools?

This catalog covers software platforms for measuring web traffic (web analytics) and behavior in digital products (product analytics). They do not replace a measurement strategy - without an event plan, consent and analytics roles, the tool alone will not fix data quality.

Features

Web analytics
Traffic, sources, campaigns, on-site conversions.
Product analytics
Funnels, cohorts, retention in apps or SaaS.
Consent / CMP
Consent management before tags fire.
Tag management
Deploy and version tags without code changes.
Session replay
Session recordings for UX and conversion debugging.
A/B experiments
Variant tests and feature flags.
Data export
BigQuery, warehouse, API - raw events.
Attribution
Assigning conversions to marketing channels.

Web analytics vs product analytics

Web analytics answers “where traffic comes from and which campaigns convert”. Product analytics answers “what users do in the product and why they churn”. Many companies use a hybrid stack - e.g. GA4 or Piwik PRO for marketing + Amplitude or PostHog for product.

Minimum platform selection plan (7 steps)

  1. Define business goals and KPIs (marketing vs product).
  2. Assess GDPR, hosting and consent (CMP) requirements.
  3. Check ecosystem (Google, Adobe, warehouse).
  4. Estimate session/event volume and license budget.
  5. Prepare an event plan (Measurement Plan / taxonomy).
  6. Compare 2-3 candidates in the comparison tool.
  7. Plan implementation: GTM, testing, BigQuery or warehouse.

FAQ

How is web analytics different from product analytics?

Web analytics measures site traffic and campaigns. Product analytics analyzes user behavior in the product (funnels, retention, feature adoption).

Is GA4 enough for SaaS?

GA4 covers marketing and basic product tracking, but advanced retention and experiments often need Amplitude, Mixpanel or PostHog.

Piwik PRO or Matomo?

Piwik PRO is SaaS with CMP and enterprise support. Matomo is open source with self-host - lower license, higher ops cost.

Do I need Consent Mode with GA4?

In the EU, usually yes - Consent Mode v2 affects data quality and GDPR compliance for Google campaigns.

How much does analytics cost?

From €0 (GA4 standard, PostHog/Mixpanel free tiers) to tens of thousands USD/year in enterprise (Adobe, GA4 360, Piwik Enterprise).

Is one tool enough?

Often not - marketing and product are different questions. A hybrid (e.g. GA4 + Amplitude) is common.

What about Plausible?

Good for simple traffic and privacy. Won't replace e-commerce or product analytics.

What's the most common mistake?

Deploying a tool without an event plan, consent and data ownership - garbage data from day one.
