I help design GTM SS architecture, choose hosting (Stape, GCP, Addingwell) and migrate tags with Consent Mode and CAPI.
Server-side tagging moves part of tag logic from the browser to a server or edge. The most common pattern is a Google Tag Manager Server-Side (sGTM) container hosted on Stape, GCP or your own infrastructure. Alternatives include edge tagging (e.g. Cloudflare Zaraz) or an enterprise gateway (e.g. Jentis).
GTM Server-Side is Google's container - full community template flexibility. Cloudflare Zaraz is a different path: edge without sGTM, faster start on CF. Managed (Stape, Addingwell) vs GCP native is a trade-off: time to launch vs TCO and control.
Tags run on server or edge - less browser code, better data control and ad-blocker resilience.
Stape - fast managed start. GCP - full control and lower TCO at scale, but requires DevOps.
Not 1:1. Zaraz is edge tagging on Cloudflare; GTM SS is Google's container with different setup.
From ~$17/mo (Stape) or ~€22/mo (TAGGRS) managed; Addingwell from ~€90/mo; GCP production from ~$90/mo compute.
It helps with data control and first-party, but does not replace CMP, legal basis and processor agreements.
In classic sGTM yes - the client container sends data to the server container.
All offer managed GTM SS. Stape has the largest ecosystem (Global on GCP or Stape Europe in EU); Addingwell and TAGGRS are European managed alternatives.
Deploying hosting without tag migration, CAPI testing and Consent Mode - server-side without client-side data quality.
