Consent Mode v2
What is the difference between Consent Mode Basic and Advanced?
Basic blocks Google tags until the CMP sends consent. Advanced loads tags with default “denied” and may send cookieless pings for modeling. Details in the mode comparison and mode selector.
Which signals does Consent Mode v2 cover?
Four key signals: ad_storage, analytics_storage, ad_user_data, ad_personalization. All should default to “denied” before consent. Code generator: /en/consent-mode-generator/.
Does Consent Mode replace a cookie banner?
No. Consent Mode is Google’s mechanism for passing consent state to tags. The banner and consent documentation come from your CMP platform.
CMP platforms
How do I choose a CMP platform?
Depends on scale, budget, TCF 2.2 and stack (GTM, CMS). Use the CMP platform catalog and platform selector for three recommendations.
Cookiebot or Usercentrics for a small site?
Both are Google CMP partners and work well for SMB. Cookiebot - popular globally, free tier up to 50 subpages. Usercentrics - stronger in DACH and EU enterprise. Compare in the CMP catalog alongside OneTrust and Didomi.
Must a CMP be Google-certified?
Not legally required, but Google CMP partners have ready-made Consent Mode v2 integrations and documentation - faster rollout.
Rollout and audit
In what order should I roll out CMP and Consent Mode?
1) Pick Basic/Advanced mode, 2) choose CMP, 3) configure default consent in GTM, 4) wire consent update, 5) test in Tag Assistant and DebugView. Path in the consent & measurement hub.
How do I verify the rollout?
Use the Consent Mode v2 checklist and GTM checklist. In the browser: GTM Preview, GA4 DebugView, Consent tab in Tag Assistant.
Why do Google Ads conversions drop after the banner?
Common causes: missing Consent Mode v2, wrong mode (Basic without modeling at high decline rates), wrong CMP category mapping, or tags firing before consent update. Consider Advanced after legal review.
